Biography - The Pattersons

The Pattersons were an Irish folk band in the 1960s to 1970s, born in Letterkenny, County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.

Nancy Simpson was the person who inspired the group and enter them in dairy fresh.

The Pattersons entered the Kilkenny International Ballad Festival in 1967 and came in the top six in the competition out of 165 acts. They were invited to perform in the United States and stayed for six months before returning to Ireland In December 1967.

When then return home they started to prepare to make their first record ( the traveling poeple ).

The Pattersons maked up one of the very few genuine brothers and sisters acts in Show Business who mixed folk music with pop music

Christine is the youngest of the two sisters, Dorothy was the second. Ronnie is the youngest of the two brothers, Billy is the Oldest of the family and the group.





The Pattersons first appeared in public in 1965, when they performed at a neighbor's sing song. A neighbor was so impressed that he offered to manage them things started happening of the family group.

The Pattersons became a trio after Dorothy left the group in 1969 after getting married and decided she could not raise a family and stay on the road.

The Patterson last performance was on the Late Late Show on new years eve 1974. The band was together for seven and a half years. On Friday 17th June 2011 The Patterson performance live at the Station House, Letterkenny.

The Pattersons are to Ireland what the Trapps were to Austria. a group of talented young singers and musicians drawn entirely from one family.

Biography - Television Shows

The Patterson with Eric Morecambe
The Pattersons are today best remembered for their appearances on the Morecambe & Wise Show. They appeared on 11 shows and 2 of them are losted. 

They also appearances on The Nana Mouskouri Show and The Val Doonican Show aswell as have there own Tv Series called "Pattersons People" on the BBC (NI) in 1969.

In July 1970 the band featured every week on the RTE series "A Handful of Songs" which also stared Danny Doyle and Anna McGoldrick.


Their appearances on the Morecambe & Wise Show lead to concert dates with 2 supporting acts, Val Doonican and Rolf Harris which were two of the UK's greatest easy listening stars at the time. They toured all over the UK and still remained based in their home town of Letterkenny, County Donegal in Ireland and continued to gain favour with the TV producers at home and abroad.

Biography - Billy Patterson



William (Billy) PattersonBorn : 17th November

Billy first marriage was to Jane he have three with daughters her called Kiera. Jacqueline and Lizzie His Second marriage was to Carmel Gallagher and had three children, Aran, Iona and Adam. They now live in Manorcunningham, County Donegal in Ireland.

Billy played the Guitar in the Group. This hobbies are Shooting, Fishing and likes to collector great Antiques.



After the band Billy was one of the founders of "Highland Radio" as well as a keen player in the Letterkenny Musical Society.

Biography - Ronnie Patterson


Ronnie Patterson - Born : 21st May

Ronnie married Rhona Duffy and has two daughters called Stephanie and Gillian. They now live near Ramelton, County Donegal in Ireland.

Ronnie played the bass in the Group. This hobbies are Golf, Flying and Shooting like his Brother Billy.

After the band Ronnie worked at RTE as a floor manager which allowed him to work on numerous music programmes.

Ronnie is now retired from RTÉ.

Biography - Christine Patterson


Christine Patterson - Born : 12th May 1950

Christine married Dr. Michael O'Dowd and have four children, Katy, Clare, Michael and David. They now live Barna, County Galway in Ireland.

Christine played the Guitar in the Group. Her hobbies are Cycling and Cooking.

After the band Christine came involved in music therapy working with children with learning difficulties.

Biography - Dorothy Patterson (RIP)


RIP, Our sincere sympathies to her family and friends.
Dorothy ( May,Orr ) Patterson - Born 1945 - Died: 2009.

Dorothy married Bill Orr and they had three children called Tory, Ailsa and Christopher. They lived at Cruit Island, County Donegal in Ireland.

Dorothy played the bass in the Group. She left the group in 1969. Despite numerous invitations to re-form the group always declined.

Dorothy died all too early in 2009 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. it was published in the Derry Journal on Monday 23rd November 2009.
She was 65 years old and had been in ill health.
